Songwriting is at the heart of who Dez is as a composer. It was in this field that he began his career and for these reasons that he even picked up a guitar. Instruments for him have always been more a tool of creativity rather than performance. In his own words: “I never wanted to be as good as this guitarist or that guitarist, I picked up the guitar because I wanted to write my own material.”

Starting as a songwriter at such a young age gave Dez time to really work on his craft, and writing while he grew as a person bred a real flexibility in him, with a love of finding new music that inspired him to bring a massive array of influences in to his own songs. Songs went from the simple 3 minute formats to more lengthy and experimental pieces. Lyrics moved on from simply poetic tales of love and angst, to elaborately and metaphorically presented comments on politics, spirituality and society.

His songwriting has more recently taken a backseat to film composing, but opportunities to write original songs for films have shown him that his songwriting continues to advance and benefits from all the music he makes. His confidence in this field remains strong always and he is seeking to collaborate now directly with new artists in producing new lyrical and musical material.
